Hold the fire steel by the handle in your left hand near the cotton ball(If you are right handed, use opposite hands if you are left handed)……..Hold the striker with your other hand,with the square high speed steel bit on the top of the fire steel with the bottom flat of the bit at about a 20 degree angle to the top of the rod ,then scrape toward the bottom fast and hard!You should generate a shower of big bright hot sparksand the cotton ball should burst into flameand burn 20 seconds to well over a minutedepending on how much petroleum jelly you used.You may not get many sparks the first few timesdue to the protective coating on the fire steel but,as the coating wears off and you gain experienceyou will find yourself making fire with nearly every strike!
